I think one way to lower gas prices is to knock off all taxes, both federal and state, but raise the costs of tolls for higways and such. However, each individual state would be given the option of whether they want to comply with this or not.

Judging by today's traffic, I don't see how this would clog not tolls roadways even more. People use tolls because they can drive faster sometimes. It would be to people's disasvantage to stay on roads where there would be alot of traffic. Anyways, your critique is flawed if you look at Grey Hound and other bus companies that run across the country.

The way it would change things is eliminate peoples' constant complaining about higher gas prices. That is what would change.

Net,

In my solution, I said is is up to each indiviaul state to as to whether they wish to comply or not.

RTO
I like your advice but there would be a lot of problems that would come up from this. Plus there is no way to dictate to over 150 million people as to how fast tha\ey can go or just 5miles under the speed limit a the minimum

Deck,

At least you offered a viable solution but you are correct when you say that will not work either.

The biggest move that needs to be made before solving the price of gas crisis would be to remove the present administration. Break the conservative connection with big business auto makers and force them to manufacture vehicles that are cheaper to operate. They should also make them more environmentally friendly and kill 2 birds with one stone.
By the way, I like your idea. Shows that someone is thinking about solutions. It would take time to install your solution, but I feel it's feasible.

Better: Everyone drive 5 miles per hour below the posted speed limits.

The change in demand would be so drastic that the futures market (which is what controls the price at the pump) would collapse within a couple of weeks.

The problem is collecting the tolls. Most states don't have the infastructure set up to collect tolls. Sadly it doesn't really matter since little of the gasoline taxes actually make it into road maintenance anyway - most go to mass transit.

Still you would think a good politician would remove the federal tax on gasoline for a month - like December.

It never ceases to amaze me how we humans blatantly and reprehensibly deliberate ignore self evident solutions to problems simply because it does not "suit them " .

This question is but a prime manifestation of this lack of intellectual and perhaps moral integrity that most people exhibit.

Living in a capitalistic state, all are fully aware of the relationship of PRICE to demand/supply.

The following is a list of countries showing their per capita gas consumption.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_oil_con_tho_bar_dai_percap-thousand-barrels-daily-per-capita

The US of course (rightly ommitting the anomolies of the first 4 countries) is the world's WORST consumer of oil which is simply reflective of the greed/arrogance/beligerence of the US and the vast majority of Americans who give the world and the environment the old finger as they barrel along in their disgusting gas guzzling SUVS.

If Americans reduced the miles/gallon they get by just 10 % ,the US would cease to have to depend on the Middle East for it's oil supplies.

This reduction would immediately activate the demand/supply economics and prices would start to tumble drastically period .

However as is fully evident by the replies on this board, the vast majority of Americans have no friggin intension of changing their "life styles" and will go on disgustingly and revoltingly WASTING fuel and placing the entire world in jeopardy ..

Americans while making up only 5 % OF HUMANITY ,CONSUMES OVER 25 % OF ALL THE OIL IN THE WORLD.

This is simply criminal / immoral behavior which I have absolutely no doubt that in one to two hundred years from now when the future generations are living the full effects of our totally reprehensible beahiors ,humans will look upon us in the here and now as as vile/repulsive as the slave traders and Robber Barons and the rest of the villans of history.

There are a number of reasons why gas consumption in all of Europe is more than 50 % lower per capita than in the US but HIGH TAXES ON GAS ARE THE MAJOR REASON FOR THE LOWER CONSUMPTION AND THESE HIGH TAXES HAVE RIGHTLY FORCED PEOPLE TO USE SMALLER MORE GAS EFFICIENT CARS.

The suggestion here that one way to lowering gas prices is to lower taxes is simply ludicrous AS EVIDENCED AROUND THE WORLD .Astounding low gas prices in the US over the decades (compared to say Europe) IS/HAS BEEN THE PROBLEM because the lower prices over time merely encouraged people to buy the gas guzzling EXTREMELY LOW MILEAGE SUVS and by so doing INCREASED THE DEMAND FOR GAS WHICH MERELY DROVE THE PRICES UP .

Lets stop playing these silly games with ourselves and act as responsible citizens both of our own countries and the world and do EVERYTHING WE CAN TO REDUCE OIL CONSUMPTION PERIOD.

First how can you justify lowering gasoline prices when are not out there in numbers buying cars that get over 30 MPG city. Your suggestion would be fruitless because we would still be paying.
The only true way to lower the price is to park these monsters and walk, not a good option but it would hit the oil market like a bankrupt, but they are betting we will be like creak heads and do anything we have to just to keep our monsters rolling

Tolls are typically privately owned roads. And with out the tax where does the money come from to maintain the roads???

We maybe could run are cars off the hot air coming out of Rush and Faux news.

Won't work. It would just clog up all the nontoll road ways.

better yet, have detroit use the hidden technology to build vehicles that get better mileage. the technology is there, but the big 3 auto makers are in bed with big oil.

How would this change anything? You are just changing where we give our money, not how much of it we are giving.
