actually it would feel bigger, for some reason, 17 to 20 feels way bigger then you might think. they measure screen sizes diaganally, so te imac would be 20 inches diagonally

Advertised screen sizes are always measured diagonally. Prior to widescreen format, most all monitors were in an aspect ratio (proportion) of 4:3 (4 wide by 3 high relative dimensions).

Widescreen monitors are 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio. So if you want to maintain the same vertical (height) dimension in the widescreen monitor as the old 4:3 monitor had, you need to multiply by 1.22 (at least for 16:9). So to match a 17 inch 4:3 monitor height, you'd need a 17x1.22=20.74 widescreen monitor. But you'll have a wider view. Widescreen monitors basically came about to better display DVD content. They are not so good for scrolling down long documents.

Definitely go w/ 20" you will be very pleased w/ the extra 3 inches. They really make a difference. for Mac's 17 inches is just to small. I regrettably purchased a 17" iMac for my home office. I use a 20" at work.... it's quite notably larger.
