I hope Ty and Renee stay happy too. But, what I don't understand is all of the "emo" in this CNN segment with precious little good reporting.
Sergeant Ziegel should have been transferred to the Marine Corps Permanent Disability Retired List. That would have given him the pay of his rank, tax-free for the rest of his life and he would have kept the same base privileges and medical benefits he had when he was on active duty. Yet, CNN deals with decision rendered by the VA instead. That tells me that Ty was trying to "double dip" and receive military disability pay and Va disability pay. It's not illegal and you don't forfeit part of one to gain the other anymore for fellows who were injured in combat. But, CNN doesn't mention that.
I recall several Marines being badly burned in a fire at Camp Fuji-MacNair in 1979. They were medically evacuated to the States and received first rare care, including restorative surgery on the parts disfigured in the fire. Of course, we had such centers of medical practice throughout the U.S. at the time. Sadly, Brooke Army Medical Center has the double task of burn therapy and restorative surgery, because we closed all the other centers after the end of the Cold War.
