She died of blunt force trauma to her thoracic region, which in lay terms means a severe blow to the chest area;the car crash was so severe, that Diana was shaken and bounced around the car so much, that her aorta ruptured. The aorta is a major artery of the heart that circulates blood throughout the body.
The car, driven by Henri Paul, was involved in a high speed chase,by paparazzi, and crashed in The Pont D'Alma Tunnel,a location known for its crashes. The only survivor of the crash,Trevor Rees-Jones,was also the only one to be wearing a seat belt. Paul, and Dodi Fayed, died in the crash. If Diana had been wearing a seat belt, she may have survived this crash.

On 31 August 1997, Diana died after a high speed car accident in the Pont d'Alma road tunnel in Paris. They were trying to dodge the papparazzis when their black Mercedes-Benz crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel and she didn't wear her seatbelt. Diana unbelted in the back seat slid forward during the impact and, having been violently thrown around the interior, "submarined" under the seat in front of her, suffering massive damage to her heart with subsequent internal bleeding. She was eventually, after considerable delay, transported by ambulance to the Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière, but on the way she went into cardiac arrest twice.
Despite lengthy resuscitation attempts, including internal cardiac massage, she died at 4 a.m. local time.

Yes, she died in a car accident in a tunnel in Paris. She was with her boyfriend Dodi. They say that if she had been taken to the hospital immediately she probably would have lived. Yes, the paparazzi was chasing her, but it has never been proven that they were the cause of the crash, definitely a factor though.

You basically have it right-she was in car accident, and the accident is likely to have been caused by her driver's high blood alcohol level and his trying to avoid paparazzi.
