No, he can't stop you from moving. But you need to give proper written notice. Look at your lease. Most month to month leases require at least a 30 day notice in writing - some require 60 days. Send it to your landlord certified mail, give your address, name, unit address, and the date you will be vacating the unit. Keep a copy of the notice with the certified mail information.

After the 1 year lease is over, the lease normally defaults to a month to month lease.

As long as either party serves proper notice ( check your lease agreement) the landlord cannot stop you from moving.
