Don't forget about the U.S. presidents before George Washington.

What? Before Washington? Yeah, the U.S. declared independence in 1776, but Washington wasn't president until 1789. During the 13 years between, under the Articles of Confederation, the following people were president:

John Hancock (May 24, 1775 – October 31, 1777)
Henry Laurens (November 1, 1777 – December 9, 1778)
John Jay (December 10, 1778 – September 27, 1779)
Samuel Huntington (September 28, 1779 – July 9, 1781)
Thomas McKean (July 10, 1781 – November 4, 1781)
John Hanson (November 5, 1781 – November 3, 1782)
Elias Boudinot (November 4, 1782 – November 2, 1783)
Thomas Mifflin (November 3, 1783 – October 31, 1784)
Richard Henry Lee (November 30, 1784 – November 6, 1785)
John Hancock (November 23, 1785 – June 5, 1786)
Nathaniel Gorham (June 6, 1786 – November 5, 1786)
Arthur St. Clair (February 2, 1787 – November 4, 1787)
Cyrus Griffin (January 22, 1788 – March 2nd, 1789)
Then the 43 presidents from George Washington through George W. Bush.

The U.S. has had 56 presidents in all since declaring independence.

Plea is close, but remember that the question is "How many Presidents of the U.S. has there been?". The others were presidents of the Continental Congress, and of the "United States in Congress Assembled", which was structured much differently that the actual United States of America under the Constitution. George Washington was the first true president of the United States of America, so there have only been 42 Presidents of the United States.

Yes, I'm a geek too.

Actually, Plea is right. The real difference between the Presidents since Washington is that Washington and all after were elected under the Constitution by the Electoral College. We were still the United States before the Constitution. Actually, we were and really still are the united States, but Lincoln kind of changed the relationship between States and the Fed.

Anyway. Sorry but Plea is right.
