i used to do that during my first days here whenever i'm having a bad day...but when i learned that it makes people feel bad...i stopped...instead i now give almost everyone a thumbs up...no sweat..it doesn't cost me anything anyway.
Sadly i still see alot of people doing that...it makes me wonder.

A very serious mental condition called Jackass Personality Disorder. It's a quite the handicap throughout day to day life.

Yeah, some people are just really arbitrary - I often read GREAT answers that get tons of thumbs downs.

I generally give everyone a thumbs up as long as it looks like they put some thought into their answer, unless their answer is obviously wrong or offensive. I reserve my thumbs down for such answers.

I often check out the "Law & Ethics" section, and I'm surprised to see how many legally sound answers (written by lawyers, paralegals, or law students) nonetheless receive lots of thumbs downs. And sometimes (but not often) completely incorrect answers receive lots of thumbs ups. Makes you wonder who exactly is giving the ratings. I suspect that a lot of people just have their e-friends rate them positively and vote for their answers, in return they do the same.

I think if we could actually see who gave a rating, that would make people a lot more accountable. After all, when you read a movie review or restaurant review, we want to know how credible the reviewer is and whether they're biased, right?

We have one over in senior citizens that likes to give thumbs down and we know who it is because the only time we see them is on questions she answers. She is a very negative person and she has most of us blocked so I dont know why she even bothers to come over there. Nobody can answer her anyway and she does not appreciate anyone elses answers so what is the point.

I know!
especially irritating when you have given a correct answer!
it sometimes looks like people ask a question JUST to give thumbs down to everyone who answers!

I once had some troll actually tell me that; because of my nickname... I should EXPECT trouble (the question wasn't even baseball related)

I have been considering posting a question about whether it would happen less often if (like STARS) it showed who gave thumbs down
or if you had to explain your reason... would people be so quick with that thumbs down!

Either their answer is really stupid or I say that answer is too perfect, too clever, too good and an envious rage overtakes me and I have to give it a thumbs down because I cannot measure up to that answer therefore feel inferior or I feel evil and need to build myself up by giving them a thumbs down to teach them a thing or two that they can't have it all all the time.

You will pay for being better, smarter and the chosen one. I feel vastly inferior to you and this is the only way I can go about it is getting 'revenge' by thumbs downs. In fact I will go about getting this agression out any way I can to make you feel less worthy and make you feel an ounce of the pain I feel inside. It's a cry for help.

I can't give thumbs up or down on this account, I do it on the other one.

It's a matter of Principal. Not every body's answer is worth a thumbs up even if they put up a good effort. Not how it's done.

Perhaps it's a valid response to what they've read. Just as I surmise that your post is a way to thumb down those who would act in a way that you've risen above from, right?

i don't get it. i have never given a thumbs down, if i didn't
like the question i just didn't answer it. some people might
have too much time on their hands to worry about that stuff.

I'm more of a sympathy thumbs up person. Thumbs down for someone who is not being hateful sucks. I'll bet there are a lot of us out there. I've never received a thumbs up that didn't have "That poor schmuck" written all over it. And yes, I'm still happy to have received them. No damn pride.

I think it's simply done because people stay anonymous and can just be "evil' for once.....
If it had to be in the open I bet people would not give so many thumbs down....

I am a thumps-up kind of girl, because i like it when people answer my questions.....
