It's a short paperback and it's probably pretty old. I wish I could remember more about it, other than that It was about a little ghost named Andrew who lived in a castle. It was my favorite book as a kid and I would just like to share it with my kids too.

I remember that, from when my kids were little. I can't remember the name of it but it seems like it had a picture of a ghost in chains on the cover. It is old, from the 60's or 70's maybe. Have you tried a used book store? Or maybe research it on Amazon.

ADD: There is a web site that will research and tell you what your book title is, costs you a couple of dollars, but maybe it will be worth your while. It's called stump the bookseller, and he can tell you the name of your favorite children's book as long as you have some basic idea of it.

There is also a book called "the Worried Ghost", by Seymour Reit from the 70's. Possible?

I would check the bookstores also, sometimes those old classics stay in print forever.

My gosh, what made so many people respond to this question?!

I DON'T think it's "Time for Andrew." I just read that one two weeks ago and Andrew is not actually a ghost...he's sort of a restless spirit who somehow switches place with his relative Andrew from a later time, and the Andrew who died earlier of diphtheria is cured in the modern Andrew's time. It's sort of complicated, but it definitely does NOT take place in a castle.

Do you remember anything else about the book you want?

The first book that came to mind was about a little ghost with the name of Gus. I remember this book because it used to be my mother's who is now 45 years old. I loved this book as a child. It was called: "Gus Was a Friendly Ghost" by Jane Thayer. I hope this helped! If this isn't the book you are thinking of it's still a good one for the kids!

Time for Andrew: A Ghost Story
by Hahn, Mary Downing.
Novel. 165 pages. Grades 4+.

Drew (real name Andrew) is to stay the summer with his great-aunt in an old house she has recently inherited while his parents go to Europe. Shortly after his arrival, he meets his wheel-chair bound and senile great-uncle. He also gets his first glimpse of a ghost: a young boy, Andrew, who looks exactly like him and who is about to die from diptheria. Convinced that a body exchange is his only hope of surviving, Andrew tricks Drew into exchanging bodies. At first furious at his plight, Drew begs Andrew whom he meets each night in the attic to reverse the exchange, especially since it is now apparent that Andrew, thanks to modern medicine, has survived the disease. Andrew is concerned about his fate, however, and refuses to go back in time. Gradually each boy grows to love the people in his new life and to feel less and less like his real self.

A Time for Andrew:
A Ghost Story

By Mary Downing Hahn

Clarion, 1994

Eleven-year-old Drew Tyler decides that instead of going to summer camp, he'd rather stay with this 80-year-old great aunt Blythe while his parents are away in France. He has second thoughts when they arrive at the dilapidated old house and when he hears his great-grandfather shout that he doesn't want Drew anywhere near him. While exploring the attic with his aunt, Drew learns he has a namesake. They discover a photograph of a boy who looks exactly like him and a cigar box filled with marbles and a note, dated June 7, 1910. As the story progresses Drew and his look-alike are involved in adventures together. Read about the deal he makes and the adjustments made by both boys in this fantastic time-travel story.
