1)a) The higher the first digit, the more recent the GPU series.
b) the higher the second digit, the more powerful the GPU in that series.
2) a) it is not automatic that a new card will fit, because some new cards will be PCI-E only, while others will be PCI-E or AGP, and some will still be PCI.
b) you will need to check the power supply requirements when looking at new cards, as the higher end cards within a series require progressively more power.

Ok most people are missing the most important details to know about these cards so I'll lay it out for you:

The first digit is the generation, so the higher that number is, the newer the card, meaning it was support the latest features and version of Microsoft DirectX. This does not by any means mean they will perform better though, for instance, a 7900GT is way faster than an 8600GT.

The key difference in these cards is the type of memory used.

The 7900GT uses 256MB of GDDR3 memory, but they key is, the memory has a 256-bit interface.

The 8600GT uses 256MB GDDR3 memory, but it is only 128-bit interface, so even though the GPU MHz clock is higher, the card is far inferior to the 7900GT's 256-bit interface.

So to sum it all up: the first digit indicates more or less how good the GPU will be and the second digit indicates how good the memory is going to be. Memory matters a lot more than GPU in terms of performance, but a newer GPU may support more software features, and indeed may be required by certain games, if not all games, in the future.

Great question.. and also great choice of graphic cards.
Nvidia is a great company I run there graphic cards all the time.

Look around on ebay, there cheap but make sure there not overclocked, or just buy brand new on ebay. Over clocking will reduce the overall life time of the card if you don't have proper cooling and that costs money.

5 series=Lower preformance
7 serises= great for new graphic card (not heavy gaming)
Still a great card though

8 series is the top of the line cards.. they get really expesive in the higher end modeles in the 8 series.

if your just starting out get the geforse 6 series 6600gt
great card!
and very good price's on them too

You might want to upgrade your ram if its lower then 512MB
1 gig is recommended for higher end graphic cards

or more.

if your prosessor is higher then a 2ghz single core
it should be fine
but like everything else it would run beter on something 3.0Ghz or faster.

Hope this information helps!
good luck in finding the new card!!

The difference between the cards are GPU (graphical processing unit) speed and RAM.

You will need to make sure that you get the right card for the open slot on your computer. The standards are PCI, AGP, and PCIe (PCI Express). Look in your computers manual to find out which it has.

The difference is performance, obviously t he last series (GeForce 8) is the best one to consider as they are DirectX10 compliant.

Now, you should check a performance table of all Series 8 models to see which one better fit your graphic needs, but basically it all come down to this:

8500GT are for basic graphics needs (MSRP: $0-90)
8600GT or GTS are for low-end gaming (MSRP: $100-199)
8800GT or GTS are for mid-end gaming (MSRP: $200-399)
8800GTX or Ultra are for high-end gaming (MSRP: $400+)

All these cards are for PCIe slot, please check your motherboard manual OR if you are allowed, open your case and identify your target slot (however, most motherboards nowadays support PCIe X16, and this is the latest slot configuration for GPUs (graphic processing unit).

RAM: latest are DDR3, yet expensive and not quite popular yet, most popular are DDR2 800MHz or faster).

Have fun! You may also want to check my sources.

Geforce FX5xxx and 6xxx are outdated. Geforce 7xxx series is good up to DX9 only, 8xxx series up to DX10.
Budget cards:
7300GS, 7300GT, 8400GS, 8500GT
Mainstream cards:
7600GT, 7900GS, 8600GT, 8600GTS
High end (powerful/expensive) cards that also need a higher rated power supply:
8800GT, GTS, GTX or Ultra
