the juniper berries in the midwest are just coming on, in time for deer season as they are used in cooking wild game. Not all jumipers have berries, however, but you can spot the ones that do because they seem to be frosted with blue. The dark blue ones are best, if they are not, they are not ripe. If you can find a tree that have not been sprayed for bagworms or something, fresh ones are best. Failing that, you can usually find them dried at a whole foods market.

Juniper berries are a popular spice, you should be able to find them at the supermarket, if not try a specialty food market in your area.
