Gouramis ate the eyes of your toad-heads (celestials).
You should not mix cold-water fish (goldfish) and tropicals (gouramis). Also, celestials should be kept only with similarly "handicapped" goldfish as they don't swim as well as other goldfish. Even if the tropical/coldwater fish combo wasn't an issue, you should not have combined the fish. The gourami would definitely out-compete the celestials for food.
Although typically peaceful with their "own kind", gourami will show aggression toward other species. The gourami instinctively ate the eyes of the celestials.
Goldfish should ONLY be kept in cold water tanks, and a single celestial needs a 20 gallon tank with very heavy filtration. Add 10 gallons of water for each additional fish.
I'm very sorry that you and girlfriend had to learn this lesson in such a tragic way. I learned that algae eating fish should never be kept with goldfish many years ago. I awoke one morning to find my algae-eater attached to my fantails head. It had sucked the eye out of my goldfish.
Hope this helps.

Goldfish of any kind are not compatible with any Gourami. This "tragedy" is a simple case of you not doing your homework! The are hundreds of sources of good information out there, the web, books, reputable pet store sales people, you have the direct responsibility of finding these sources and using them.
I'm sorry but you and your friend deserve no sympathy.

Umm... Are you feeding the other fish too? Some fish may think your goldfish's eye is food and it eats it's eye out. Sorry. And instead of freezing it, You should let it live.

Call your local pet or fish specialist.
There may be a problem with aggression with the gouramis.
I have a 55 gallon at home, and all of the sudden my guppies tails were shorter, and so was the beta's. I called my local fish specialist, and found out that danio's are "fin nippers" and will nip and break the fins of other fish, and gave me a soultion to the situation.
If you don't have a local fish specialist yahoo lookup SailFin in Champaign, IL. they have a web sight, and are GREAT at answering questions like that.
GOOD LUCK!!

You should not mix these fish. Gourami can be aggressive, sorry to say,but they ate the goldfish's eyes.
Goldfish are cold water, gourami are tropical.Gold fish also get very large, one needs 20 gallons by it's self.

While dwarf gouramis are usually not as agressive as their larger cousins, they can still be fairly agressive. It is very common for more agressive fish to go after the eyes or fins of less agressive fish. I'm sorry.

Goldfish are cold water fish, and gouramis are tropical. Gouramis can also be semi-aggressive. That is probably why they attacked your goldfish. Sorry to hear about it.
