i just baught a 1987 camaro with a 2.8 V6. as you can imagine its a very weak engine, and i was considering swaping the engine out. So what cars have a LS1 or 350 TPi?
including parts and labor id like to keep this at around $1,000 is that possible? how much does the labor cost?
i recently saw a 96 caprice with a LT1 for $550

It would be cheaper in the long run to forget the swap as you would have to change the wireing harness and computor to match the engine, that would have to be from a camaro or firebird to keep the conections close to the right locations.
You would have to have the cat back exhust done to match the engine needs.
Radiator would be changed. plus A/C.
The K-frame or front crossmember would need to be changed for the V8 version
The transmission and rear end would need to be changed out to handle the V8.

The LT1 started in the 92 vette, it went until 96. This was an iron block with alum heads. the first year for the camaro was 93. this ran until 97. Then it switched to the Ls1 in the camaro. That ran from 98 - 2002. You could also get the Lt1 in a 94-96 impala SS or Caprice. Although they had iron head not alum like the vette or camaro/firebird. Be careful about buying a caprice, even though it is a (baby) Lt1, not a 350. You need to look into gauges, You will need to look into doing exhaust as well as accessories if you change into the 87. The motor mounts, etc. You will also have to change the radiator, fans, the rearend is not a good enough gear or even a posi. You need to research the prices a bit more. There is no way to do that conversion for 1000. It takes quite a bit of work and to be done correctly at a shop will take upwards of 30 hrs or so. That is in just getting it running.

Police cars used them. They also used the IROC engines in the late 80's & early 90's. There are still enough of them around. It would be best if you found a doner car so you'll have the wiring harness, transmission and rear end. The one in the car will not handle the added power. Beginning in 87 they were fuel injected. One thing nice about Chevy's is so much stuff is interchangable. I'd buy the Caprice if your sure it's an LT1. If its not a cop car or SS Impala, it's not originaly an LT1. It's a 305. Those old cop cars were fun to drive. You might have a hard time finding some one to do the swap for $500.00. If you ask around there are some good "shade tree" guys around that might do it.

For one, what's the mileage? For two, unless you're a mechanic yourself, you're sure to face quite a few repair costs that will drive up your cost of ownership. And considering you believe that a 92 5.7 v8 gets "not that bad" gas mileage, I'm assuming you're not a mechanic. That thing will mayybe get 15 mpg highway if you're lucky. You're much better off looking into like a late 90s civic si or something along that line for a first car in that price range. That'll at least be a little fun without sacrificing too much reliability and gas mileage. You could also look into like a celica gts or something. Just try to get the lowest possible mileage on whatever car you decide on. I wouldn't recommend that vette.

Corvette has LT1, I put one in my truck back in the day. Labor is probably going to be more than you expect because who ever does it is going to add more by running into other concerns. Sometimes if you research some old Chevy trucks have the same engine in them and probably much more cheaper. Best of luck!
