You're on stand-by. It's like being at work but able to go home. Say for instance, if you're a doctor you might be on call, but only have to come into work when they need you!

Being "on call" means that your place of employment can call you to come in and work, and you have to make sure that you are available to do that. Usually there is extra renumeration (more pay) for those on call.

that you are to be expected to come in if you are called so keep your phone with you at all times and don't go out of town in case we call you. it sucks

well it would depend on what job your on call for but it usually means that if any time occurs where they need you, you have to be able to come in quickly.

depends. if your a doctor it means that ur allways ready to be where u have to be to treat/save somebody. but or somthing else than it normaly just means being ready to do what u have to
