while I agree that this story is tragic, I believe that it is also a big responsibility for parents to mind what their children are doing on the net. Even though she was 13, she obviously was still very naive and gullible. I am not condoning the actions of the other girl and her parents, but these days, it is harder to tell what is "safe" and unsafe for children. I have a younger sister that is 12 and on myspace and I was appalled at the things that she was saying (about herself!) Using derogatory names for herself etc.
My son who is 6 will not be going on those sites and I will make sure I monitor him very closely. It is so important for parents to ensure that they always keep communication with their kids open. It's when they become teens that they really start to close up and hide things. What a tragic loss for that family.

Myspace has nothing to do with the fact that she was cyber bullied. You can be cyber bullied on yahoo, goggle, or msn. So does that mean that the whole Internet should be shut down?..I think not.
The only reason that t happens so often on Myspace is because it's all you hear about.
There's always somebody saying something happened because of Myspace.
'Oh, my kids are too young.'
'There are predators"
and stuff like that.
Because Myspace is such a big website people pay more attention to it versus other websites.
It's gonna happen regardless, so Myspace can't be blamed for the drama.
[P.S. Besides the person who did it should get blamed because they should know better.]

Yes I read that too, and it is very sad. However, Megan's parents should have monitored her a little more closely. Apparently they knew she had an account, but at the age of 13? That's unacceptable, but not really Myspace's fault. A 13 year old has no business on an online social networking site.
Her parents should have been more accountable. Responsible parents would have blocked her computer from even accessing Myspace. But at the same time, shame on that person who made up the "Josh" story. That was despicable.
Unfortunately, pedophiles and psychos have been around since the dawn of time.

You're right, it's a sad story, something like this should have never happened. But, it is the user's responsibility to ensure their own personal safety when using any internet site. Anyone with sense knows you don't go around talking to random people on myspace, giving out your information, or anything of the sort. As well as the fact that she should have known better than to listen to things someone she didn't even know said about her. Suicide is all too prevelant in today's world, the only reason this one is getting attention is because of Myspace, and to blame this suicide on myspace alone would be like blaming murder solely on guns, you need someone to operate them to make it work.

Hmm.. depressed 13 year old commits suicide. Myspace to blame? Not the parents? Not the teachers? Not the other kids in school? Not the bus driver? Not the people who were getting her down?
I think a lot more kids get hurt and depressed at school than on Myspace. Paedophiles, rapists and murderers all existed before the internet.

Hm? I think that's why they have an age limit. Myspace is a good website, i mean yeah its sad that a little girl commited suicide. and i feel sorry for her parents but still. But that is why they have put up an age limit. Then again your makin itsound as if the guy killed her. But he did not, she commited suicide. I see for were your concern is. The people who run myspace did try something to prevent it. By the age limit, thousands of new account's are made each day. For anyone that will be hard to try to actually figure out if the user is above the age limit.

I've heard of something very fimilair to that but im not sure if they're the same thing.
I heard that this 13 year old was very depressed and stressful against school and wen she got on myspace I think it was yea, her neighbor or something pretended to be a dude on myspace and started complimenting her. After the mother found out that the 13 year old had nothing to do with her son/daughter, apparently the mother/the guy stopped responding and stopped getting on myspace. So the girl decdied to commit suicide.

I wanted to blame Myspace too when my nephew committed suicide this past June (he was 16) and his parting words were left on his Myspace page. But then again, I wanted to blame the band that wrote the song Delila which he left on his page. Really neither of these two sources are at fault; however, that neighbor certainly did the girl harm and should be punished for some crime . . .wreckless endangerment? Involuntary manslaughter?

what else can myspace do? thousands of people make a profile each day, it's not like the myspace workers can come to peoples houses and demand to see birth certificates to make sure everyone's at least 14. plus, banning it will make the people who actually use it to keep in touch with friends like.. loose friends. what i think, is that parents should be more strict and dsciplinary to their child if they do have a myspace.

ok, this is serious, but how is myspace to blame? they their regulatory checks and have systems in place to keep out undisirables. inc peodophiles.
however, there are people who can fall through the net, this is the same WHATEVER WEBSITE be it social or gaming etc. and true to a certain extent in any company, undisireables can filter through the "safety net"
how do you know who you are talking to on y/a? how do you know if a child is on here and is being bullied or taken the mik out of on here. it happens. there are bad people out there, and there always will be.
i still dont get why you are blaming myspace for this tho?
the only person who should be brought to justice here is the twisted neighbour who made this 13 year old feel so about about herself that she felt she had to commit suicide.
to be fair why are we on this site? to get our opinions out there and to talk to new people, which is what this site, myspace, bebo, facebook, youtube.... are for.
this story is extremely sad and it came to a bad ending. but perhaps it will make other children see that the internet isnt a place full of nice people looking for healthy relationships, there are people out there who only want to cause distruction and pain to other peoples lives.
and its true not only on here but in society as well.
its a hard lesson to learn and i feel so bad for this girls family and friends,
but how long can we wrap this all up in cotton wool?
