no low gas does not cause the check engine light to come on. It would cause the gas light to come on but not the check engine light

if the check engine light comes on it has nothing to do with the fliud levels the gas cap may not be on correctly . the easiest way to find why the light is on let a trained mechanic put the car on a diagnostic computer. engine should be cold for this procedure

No, check engine means its in the electrical system, could just be a fuse.

Any thing is possible in cars these days.The gas cap not being put back on tight after refueling will even cause it.Take it to shop.
