How DARE you??!?!??!
*Beats Zalem with bat*
No. I do not comply to any culture or tradition either. I am American as I was born here and I am of Jewish ancestry but this does not make me who I am. Patrick mentioned that "we are only as unique as society allows us to be" and while I agree with him from a sociological point of view (and from the point of view of ourselves and our inability to see our own light shine), it is different to those who love us thoroughly. With them, our uniqueness knows no bounds and continues to amaze and astonish daily. I think that the Carpathian might defer to agree with me as well here. Without trying to sound cutesy, I know at least one little girl who is probably the most unique person in the world in his eyes. Still, the way we are treated by most of society often has the greatest effect on us and we shut down so as not to be "different". Celebrating one's differences is a terrific way to begin breaking that pattern.

I think the statement needs a little refining:
"I do not identify with any culture or tradition"
Whether we like it or not, we all submit in varying degrees to the framework of the culture in which we live; sometimes it takes transplanting to another culture to appreciate this, but as an Aussie now living in America, I can cite my own experience in this case. As a person who never identified with my own culture when I lived back home, I was surprized to discover how much of its imprint was clearly registered on me when I came to the States.
Anyway, your statement doesn't offend me at all, but I think the point of emphasis is the identification, not compliance.

It doesn't offend me. I think you're wrong, though. Pretty much whatever you do, whether you're complying or trying to defy culture, is still being a part of it, and you're going to comply in most way to the culture you were raised in.

NO...because I would just want you
to be happy...
Everyone can and should believe in different things..that's what makes us human and all of us different at the same
time..but in the end, if you care about a person...you want them to be happy...and it
sure doesn't make any difference to me,
if you believe or not...your still someone
I care about!!!
