I'm an aspiring artist and I really love drawing anime and other forms of art.
I want to buy a graphic tablet, but they seem expensive.
How hard is it to adapt to using one?
What is the best kind to buy for personal
non-commercial use?

Hi Misty,
I use a digital tablet for my photography work. First question you have to ask yourself is will purchasing a tablet worth what you will receive in selling your work. I have a Wacom Intuos 3 6x8 size and I use it every day for retouching my images & making Digital Watercolors of children's portraits. It takes some time to get used to how the stylus feels as you are working on the tablet. Maybe you could ask someone who has one if you could give it a try before you invest in one.
You will need software like Photoshop but the another painting software you would love is called Painter by Corel. I have Painter IX. So there's another expense to get started.
Painter is a complicated program and does take time to master. If you purchase the wacom tablets which are I feel the best, they do include Painter Classic so you could get started with that first. They even include tutorial cds on how to set up your tablet. Check out Ebay for your tablet. I got a great deal for mine and it was brand new. Better to purchase a larger one than the smaller ones that are only 4 x 5 in size. Also, you will need at least 512 of ram in your computer memory for the tablet to work smoothly. I hope this helps with making your decision.

I have been working VERY happily, for the last six years with my cheap, 4 x 6 Wacom Pen Partner. I have felt very little need to upgrade to a larger, more expensive model, despite what many other artists may say.

Recently, I purchased an off brand tablet for my grand daughter's computer from a company called Computer Geeks (www.geeks.com). It was very inexpensive, on sale for $49 plus shipping. AND, at the time, they had a two for one offer! (Part number: WP5540)

I installed it, a couple of weeks ago, and it works just as well as my Wacom.

For the price, you can't go wrong with this one as a way to find out how one works and how well YOU can work with it.
