I guess it is in chapters 6-11, but what is Jim's motive in running away? I know he heard that he was going to be sold so ran away, so is that the answer? Also, who was Judith Loftus?

One more question: in what way does twain contrast the river? why?

thanks so much!

Yes, Jim ran away becasue he heard he was going to be sold. He wanted to get to Cairo, Illinois, at the mouth of the Ohio River, where he could travel up the Ohio to free territory. (Actually, Illinos, which was across the river from Missouri all along, was free, so theoretically, if he could have made his way on across from Jackson's island, he'd have been on free soil, but then there wouldn't have been a story.) Judith Loftus is in Chapter 11--right there in the book for anyone to read. Watch for inconsistencies in her attitude.

Contrast the Mississippi with what? Life on shore? Just think how he portrays each.
