M4A1, Legal to buy or not?

Im looking to buy and M4A1 assault rifle. Is it legal to buy them or not?

Yes but it has to be modified for civilian use . The civilian type excludes possibility of automatic fire. Also state laws very, in NY you can not have even the civilian type. General rule of thumb is can not be capable of fully automatic fire, meaning you have to push trigger for each fire. But check state laws too because some states will not allow it.

You can't buy one because it's government property. You can by the civilian equivalent, but I don't know what that is.
