It depends on where you are (what state are you in?), but it's a fairly simple process.
You probably don't need a lawyer. Go to the clerk's office at the courthouse (not city hall) and ask for name change forms. They will help you with the forms.
They will tell how much the filing fee is (probably $200 or so, depending on what state you are in).
You will have to swear that you are not changing your name for the purpose of defrauding anyone.

It doesn't take long at all. You need only to go to a notary public and inform them you are changing your name (I did this) and start using it on EVERYTHING- your social security number, (apply for a new card) I did this years ago so I don't know if you would have to contact a lawyer or not. It didn't cost me that much at all! Like $20. I was 16 or 17 when I did this.

The actual paperwork takes a few minutes. Most states require you to PUBLISH your intent for a certain period of time before the change is legally in effect. This gives anyone that has reason to believe he is changing his name for fraudulent reasons to inform the court. The cost varies by state. Your states probate court should have all the information you need.

Go down to city hall and fill out the paper work. I think the cost is a couple of hundred dollars and can take a number of weeks for all the paper work to be approved.

I'm going through the same thing and just figured it out, I went to my library's web site and found the papers that I needed, then you'll have to call your circuit court and set a court date, and the cost will be anywhere from 100 to 200.

If you are changing your last name, it doesn't cost to change it on your social security card. On your birth certificate if you are changing your last name on it there is a small fee, you would have to call your local birth/death certificate office. Your license you will have to show proof that your last name has changed. Now if it's for a child that you want to change the last name that is more complicated. Overall you it should only cost you 60.00 dollars if it's your last name you are wanting to change and you don't have to contact an attorney for that.

Start at your county probate court. It takes a couple of months, maybe. Hundred dollars or so. You don't need a lawyer. The people at the probate court will help you.
