Hello,

I am trying to use my Western Digital My Book Premium External hardrive with my Mac. I have installed Windows with Boot camp and want to use the fire wire instead of USB. I downloaded all the drivers for the HD and hooked it up to the mac. It works; I can access the hard drive and everything.

The problem is that the drive won't shut off when I turn off the computer. It doesn't turn off whether I am in Windows or OS X.

Can anyone tell me how to get the external hard drive to shut down properly when the computer is turned off? I am new to Macs and may be overlooking a simple detail. Thanks!

I looked up your drive on Western Digital's site. I found this in their support page:

"To disconnect your external hard drive from your Macintosh computer:

1. Simply drag the drive icon to the trash can to safely dismount the hard drive.

3. You may also unplug the power cable for the external hard drive from the wall if you wish to turn off the external hard drive while it is not in use."

(Also, if you have your Finder preferenes set to show hard disk icons on the desktop, you can highlight it, press Command + E, that will unmount it, or do the same in a single, open Finder window.)

I can't explain why it shows steps 1 and 3 but no step 2... Hmmm.....typo? Well, anyhow, it appears WD didn't put a power switch in this drive case. A talented technician could add one so you don't have to crawl down under your desk to unplug it.

this is a foul concept... ought to doubtlessly reason alot of issues or maybe documents lose and workstation crashes... you need to use the macbook's annoying force for setting up the OSes... and then use the exterior for storing each little thing else... you may by no potential deploy an OS on an exterior force... uncertain its even achieveable
