It's not a test she has to pass!

If she's feeding happily with the nipple she has, carry on with that. If she's taking ages to get through her bottle, give her the next one - if when you do that it's milk everywhere, switch back. The ages are just guidelines, not some indication of progress or maturity. Some babies need a big hole nipple right away and others never do, it all depends how hard they suck. It's just that older babies, on average, suck harder.

You don't really know for sure because the feeding patterns vary from one baby to another. The age on the package is merely a suggestion.

Although your baby might be ready to go up one level, pay close attention to your baby during feeding. If he/she feeds fine then continue to use the current one; if your baby looks frustrated and tired because he/she cannot get milk to come out fast enough, it doesn't hurt to get some number 2 nipples and give it a try. You will notice your baby being much happy during feeding if he/she likes the change. That's how you tell.

You can always switch it back if it seems too fast for your baby, but do give your baby time to get used to the faster-flowing nipple. Good luck!

A good way to tell if your baby is ready for a higher number nipple is that u can feel ur baby suck harder, pay attention to the next couple of feeding, see if she is sucking harder or should i say trying harder to get milk from the nipple, you dont want her trying to hard and if she is then it is time to advance!

Check the amount of time it takes her to empty the bottle, as her feed amount increases. If its too long, move up to the next level of nipple, which will flow faster. Simple really.

I had this problem too! I tried to switch my daughter as soon as she was supposed to but she choked and coughed and got really bad gas. So I gave it a try every week or so until she seemed to take it ok. It took an extra month but I think every baby is different!
