carpeting was the gaudy silly symbol of another decade, along with stagflation?
Let's hope that the silly fad of putting green or orange or pink granite in your kitchen will implode like the credit markets and saner heads will once again rule.
Similar to the 1970s where for a short time you couldn't sell your house unless it had shag carpet, soon followed by rational, sober minds which required one to rip that crap out before selling a home.

LOL awesome question! Yes, gaudy granite counter tops and any fixtures sold by Home Depot will earmark this era as the "My Equity paid for your Upgrade" generation of home design.

Probably not, since granite countertops have always been considered a prime upgrade to a house. Until the past few years, however, granite was priced in the stratosphere, such that only the truly elite even considered installing them. Recently prices on granite have dropped to the point that it is competititive with Corian, Silestone, and Zodiaq.

This is a pretty interesting point. Its amazing how much money people will dump into their homes that they refinaned at 100% loan-to-value just so the Jones's next door would be impressed will all of their upgrades. Now that ARM is adjusting and the payment they could barely afford previously on their over-built house is completely unaffordable. So here's what happens....they try to sell their over-built over upgraded house and for some reason they just don't understand how they can't get $500K for their home. Well maybe that's because the Jones' next door just sold their house for $400K because they weren' over-built and over-extended on their home.

Just so you know, shag is making a come back. I had shag carpet installed in my new townhome, it's changed and it's quite stylish, and I'm not talking about that horrible monstrosity that they used to put in homes in the 70's.

As for granite, it's considered quite the upgrade in kitchens to have granite, but I agree it should be tasteful granite.

Yes, everything has a cycle.

I am seeing 30 year cycles in commodities.

Gold in near the high it made 27 years ago so yes, everything old is new again.
