This is a common misconception. They attacked us because of our various military bases throughout the middle east. Out of the 190 nations of the world, we have bases in 130 of them. How would Americans feel if Russian or Chinese troops were in our country in bases that are not ours? The truth is, we were attacked and it is completely our fault. The government says they attacked us because of our freedom which is complete B.S. If they hated freedom, they would attack those other countries that you listed.

They attack America and Britain and to a lesser extent Spain because those countries are the main allies in the war against Iraq and Afghanistan .
The other reason they attacked Spain was because they perceived a weakness in will just before a general election and felt they could influence the outcome, which actually proved to be the case because the government was changed and the Spanish troops withdrawn from the conflict.

The terrorists have no aim to hate for our freedom and I think they want money & power? They are thinking that money & power can only be achieved through terrorists easily. They became terrorists due to misguided by the societies. On the other hand, what are the causes or origin of such activities and these may have so many reasons. Some countries want to remain in the powerful country due to the her money by given money to another countries men to defame their nations. The result of which is to grow terrorists by getting money without any labour. When the suitations became out of controle these people can attack any country without any fear. I donot think the world people are making any deep effort to solve such problem except to blame to each other. Thanks for the questioner to ask timely question for burning problem of the universe.

All the BS is b/c we back Israel. We are defending a smaller country from being wiped off the map. If we renounced Israel, than the Islamic Arabic community would get their way.
We got wrapped up in a war that is older than most countries.

bush saying that al qaeda attacked us because they hate our freedoms is like naven johnson (steve martin) in the jerk, when the sniper is shooting at him from the hillside and the jerk proclaims: "he hates these cans."
of course, its easier to just say really stupid stuff than to admit our enemies are motivated by rational motives, even if we dont agree with them.
its a shame the nsa's national intelligence estimates and the findings of the iraq study group run counter to bush's ridiculous claim.
for me, i think al qaeda really only hates us because of the designated hitter rule! damn american league!

First of all, you need to face facts: after Saddam's army gave up, not one more person had to die. The Iraqis have drafted their own Constitution, elected their own leaders, and created their own police force. Their military is independent. The terrorists are islama fascist traitors to their own people. They can't stand the idea of people having the freedom to make up their own minds. They want the power to autocratically rule everyone.
Every death is the sole responsibility of the islama fascist traitors who won't obey the democratically elected governments voted on by their own people.
So you would call a war to free millions of people from a brutal dictator whose nickname was "The Butcher of Baghdad" an "unjust war"? Are you joking? If this what Liberal education is doing to the minds of our youth?
We similarly liberated the Afghans from the ignorant, backwards (and smelly) Taliban. As a result, women are able to attend school and will lead normal lives. Do you call this an "unjust war"? Interesting, because I would call it an act of compassion.
If you are under the impression that these terrorists don't hate us because of our freedoms, think again. They especially hate the United States because we EXPORT these dangerous ideas of individual dignity, inalienable human rights (notably for women), and that most offensive of notions that people of differing backgrounds can get along well together (the terrorists want to exacerbate tensions between Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds; they want to give the impression unity is impossible and undesirable).
The terrorists hate the U.S. because our culture is dominant in the world. They don't want their youth listening to our music. They don't want them getting dangerous ideas about freedom and lifestyle choices from our movies. The U.S. is the biggest exporter of "radical" ideas, and they scare the bejesus (or should I say the "beAllah") out of these backwards, intolerant islama fascists, who would prefer to live like it was 700AD.
To all the people who blithely dismiss how dangerous the siren song of freedom and economic opportunity is, remember the massive, Herculean efforts the Communist governments of the USSR and its satellites went to in order to prevent these ideas from seeping into their lands.
Dictatorships like the one desired by the islama fascists can only exist in isolation. Once dangerous ideas about freedom creep in, the government must always be on the defensive. They want absolute control.
Countries like Holland or Swizerland are small and unimportant in the dissemination of ideas. When is the last time you heard of a new trend come out of Holland? Great new music video? New fashion? Nope, the U.S. dominates in culture. Hence, we are a danger. The U.S. throws a monkey-wrench into the schemes of the cowardly terrorists whose actions can't survive the scrutiny of a free populace.
ADDENDUM: I realized I didn't fully answer the question. You are right about the terrorists targeting the countries that have troops in Iraq. However, the number Spain had was pitifully small. I think it's more a matter of opportunity. There are a lot of Muslims living in Britain and Spain. It's easier for them to plan and get assistance there.
However, I still stand by my assertion that the terrorists due indeed despise and fear our freedoms, because that kind of open society means that their dreams of total control are impossible.

No its because Holland, Switzerland and Canada will eventually capitulate to Islamic rule without a fight - the US, Britain and Spain would never do so.

The whole concept of "they hate our freedoms" is a load of horse dung. They hate us because we support Israel, because we have permanent military bases on Muslim lands, because we overreach in our involvement with Muslim governments, and because they don't agree with our society's morals that are spreading into their media and schools.
The single greatest thing to do to stop terrorism is to leave the Muslim world alone.
