well you can't rip dvds b/c dvds generally have a copyright on them saying it can't be copied and distributed

You are allowed to make copies (backups) for your own use (ie so the originals don't get scratched etc)
It becomes illegal if you do that then sell the originals or the copies.

You can copy them for your own use (as backup); it is illegal when you give them to someone else or sell them. That includes family and friends.

i think you can rip your own and have it as an extra copy but you just can't give em to anyone or sell them. im not totally sure tho but i think thats how it works

copiying dvd's is only illeagal if you are selling them...
if your copying them to give to your friends/ family...
then it doesnt matter...
