The singles and albums go gold (500,000 units sold) before they go platinum (one million) or silver (10 million).

In the US albums can go gold, platinum and diamond. Each level refers to numbers of albums sold. Gold = 500,000 Platinum = 1,000,000 and Diamond = 10,000,000.

There's Gold, which is 500,000+ copies.
You know Platinum.
Then there's Diamond, which is 10x Platinum.

I'm not sure about Silver. Countries have different numbers for each certification (possibly due to population, I don't know about that one, either). And according to South Park, you can have Myrph if you're a Christian band =)
