the Nazis made all jews in Poland and neighboring countries wear a star of david sewn onto their clothes

most jews were identified via their papers, also the Nazi's used stereotypes, the "big noses" and the jewish accent in their voices.

alot of innocent people were mistaken as jews back then and sent to the camps

Jewish families were known to leave their children with non-jewish friends and have them raised as non-jews to save them, but times were tough and some families turned the children over for food from the nazis

The nazis passed the first formal laws diuscriminating against jews on 9/15/35 knowns as the The Nuremberg Laws formally known in Germany as the "Reich Citizenship Law of September 15, 1935"

Nazi decree was issued which defined a "full Jew" as a person with at least three Jewish grandparents. Those with fewer than three grandparents were designated as Mischlinge (half-breeds), of which there were two degrees: First Degree Mischlinge - a person with two Jewish grandparents; Second Degree Mischlinge - a person with one Jewish grandparent.

The Nazis also issued somewhat complicated instructional charts to help bureaucrats distinguish the various degrees of Jewishness. Generally, the more "full-blooded" a Jew was, the greater the level of discrimination. But much of the confusion remained. In many cases, the necessary genealogical evidence concerning Jewish family backgrounds was simply not available.

As it turned out, about 350,000 Germans could be classified as Mischlinge; with 50,000 having converted to Christianity from Judaism; 210,000 being half-Jews; and 80,000 considered quarter-Jews.

They classified all German citizens through an investigation and with papers declaring them Aryan or a Jew using the definitions mentioned above. Even Mischlinge were classified as jews and sent to the camps. When Germany conquered and occupied other countries they used the gestapo to do a similiar classification of all citizens to determine who was a "Jew". It was lineage not name, papers, looks or any other method.
