many scholars have been criticizing American society as being complacent to politics, world events, and civic duty in general. Taking that into consideration, and thinking about what I have read in class today, do you think today's society is complacent?

How am I supposed to 'Think about what you have read in class today?'

And yes Americans are complacent. We are willing to not think for ourselves anymore and let the Rush Limbaughs and Michael Moores tell us how to think about each and every topic. We refuse to hear anything outside of what is reported to us by these partisan mouthpieces. We refuse to consider the other sides view points, only to villify their decisions.

I believe that many people are complacent not because sense of optimism, though.

Optimism isn't the opiate but Pessimism is the opiate of the masses. When people are hopeful they are more likely to act on their environment inorder to affect positive change thereby not become complacent.

Very much so. Take the Iraq war-almost 50% of Americans, 6 years later, still believe Iraq was behind 911; how much homework can these people be doing, much less critical thinking. You will find the same complacency re: poverty, health care, our civil rights and much more.

"socialism is the opiate of the masses" "a healthy intelligent mind is the fear of all governments ! " here is the way these quotes should be. where the hell do you go to school to learn this drivel as you have quoted? no wonder we have kids committing suicide ! liberal agenda is destroying the USA........yes,fortunately only the liberal half is complacent.

and here I thought the adage was "Religion is the opiate of the masses."

And I think this is the type of subject I'd rather debate over a bottle of wine or a few good beers.

Sorry, but "many scholars" holds no credibility with me:

A report released on Wednesday on the political views of faculty members accuses professors of liberal “groupthink,” a stance that the report says puts them at odds with the beliefs of most Americans on national and international issues.

Yes. It shows by the amount of anti depressants and drugs Americans are hooked on in order to distract themselves from solving their problems.
