And why does Tom Tancredo seem to be the only politician speaking out on this?

Why are all of the other politicians so spineless and phony?

Where's our so called for the people politicians such as Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, Nany Pelosi, John Murtha, John Kerry, Dick Durbin, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and Ted Kennedy support for such an idea like this?

Whether you agree with Tancredo on other political issues or not, you have to admit that he's right on this one.

One language helps us work, live, and communicate together effectively.

It's the glue of a nation.

When my ancestors came here they spoke German, but learned English. The common language is what allows the USA to work so well. I grew up in Canada where they have two official languages, and those outside Canada, there is actually two Canada's. Quebec, that speaks French and the rest of Canada that speaks English. Is this what we want the USA to be, split because of a language barrier?

I know people from Vietnam, Korea, South Africa, and Kenya, they all learned English and speak it better than some Mexicans who've been here for almost five years!

In America, English is the unoffical official language. Making it official would just be a formality and wouldn't change anything, because there will simply never be a majority of people from one country or one race in America that speak a language other than English.

It has been about 55 years since I was in High School and studied American History, however I seem to recall that in about 1824 or 1825, the "Official Language, to be spoken in the U.S. Government" was declared, and voted on and passed by both houses of Congress. I remember that the final tie breaking vote between German and English, was cast by a Senator, from German extraction, and he voted for English (Since it was the English who first came to this Continent and the original settlers were from England) .
His casting that last tie breaking vote for English, cost him his election and eliminated any future plans for him. He died, several years later, broke, homeless, distraught, rejected and alone !!!!
Does todays schools teach anything like this?

Maybe because about 20-25% of SECOND GENERATION American citizens speak Spanish at home? We're not counting people who used to be citizens of another country and then became Americans. We're not talking people with non-citizen parents who happened to born on American soil. We are talking people who, at the time of their birth, had at least one parent who was an American citizen. It's so obvious that we are a bi-lingual nation and have been for many years that one can only wonder why some people are in such deep denial about this. Not only in denial, but going around insisting that others join them in their irrational stance.

PS - St. Augustine (Florida) was established when? Arizona become a part of the United States when?

Democrats think freedom belongs to the whole world off the backs of Americans, including our forefathers' pain, suffering and deaths. This means that speaking English, and making it an official language for America is to deny the freedom to speak any language of choice by those who never paid a price for the rights granted them. I guess Libs don't understand that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. They think Health-care is!

Actually Giuliani has taken action, he doesn't really speak about it.
We didn't have everything in english / spanish in NYC when he was Mayor. His stand was, if you want to live here, learn the language. He even supported programs to teach english.

Just recently he went to "Gino's" in Philly. Very controvertial considering Gino's is being sued to take down a sign that says, No english, no service (I'm paraphrasing, but the story is out there).

The oxy moronic part of this is when you're on the phone and you are asked to push 2 for spanish, you get a bilingual american in america that can speak spanish. If you press 1 for english you get some character in india or some place you cannot understand.

Don't you just love it, press 2 next time, spanish, and get an american you can understand!

Amen to that Bro! Preach it!

I was naturalized in 1980 the LEGAL way and am proud to be American! I've put my native language in the backseat for the good of assimilating into the U.S. and have NO regrets. I am embarrassed by those that feel that they can come into this country and not go through the proper routes to reside here legally. And with living here, it just makes total sense to learn how to speak and communicate in English (albeit it took me over 30 years!). It just takes hard work and persistence. I did it, amidst many instances of setbacks and ridicule.

What a great country we live in ~ So much freedom, So many blessings! Thank You Lord God Almighty!
