I always thought Thanksgiving was the last Thursday in November as declared by President Lincoln (October 3, 1863). Why is that different this year?

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada.

After 1815 there were no more Thanksgiving Proclamations until the Presidency of Lincoln, who made two during the Civil War.

President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a Federal holiday as a "prayerful day of Thanksgiving" on the last Thursday in November. Since then every U.S. President has always made an official Thanksgiving Proclamation on behalf of the nation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the date for Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941).

Because this year, the first of the month happened to be on a Thursday. Thanksgiving is usually the 4th Thursday of the November and on years when the first of Novemeber is a Thursday, then it's still the 4th Thursday, but not the last.. Hope this helps.

In the United States of America Thanksgiving always and only falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Not the last Thursday or any other variation. Years ago it was on the last Thursday but, I believe it was President Franklin D. Roosevelt who made it the 4th Thursday nationwide. Texas held out for several years and celebrated it on the last Thursday. But in the 50's or 60's they finally gave in and went with the rest of the country. I know the day because my birthday is Nov. 29 and it never falls on Thanksgiving. As this year it is on the last Thursday of the month. When I was a child I used to wish for it to happen but it never did. In Canada they celebrate it in October. Maybe because the harvest is earlier because it gets cold up there sooner.

Traditionally, it is the 4th Thursday of November, and as a general rule that would usually make it the last Thursday, but since this November has 5 weeks, Thanksgiving (and my birthday) are coming a little early this year.

No, it's traditionally the FOURTH Thursday in November. This is often the last Thursday in the month, but not always (given leap years and the odd number of days in a year).
