It is more than just an American City. It is arguably the most visited city in the world by people of every race and culture. It is a symbol of America, from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty ,Wall Street to Central Park.
Terrorists want to make a statement to show their contempt for America they choose a target that is both Highly visible and highly symbolic of what is America.

New York not only has an emormous popuation, it also is symbolic to the economic and social wealth of the US. In the same way that London is a potential target in the UK, New York is in the US because an attack there shows, ideally, that you aren't safe anywhere, even in a city covered in police, security and cameras.
Terrorism isn't about killing people - it's about spreading fear - spreading terror - to the extent that it prohibits one from leading a "normal" life.

Because it would get far more media coverage! Same as London over here! At the end of the day that is what these crack pots want! they ain't going to blow up some never heard off town because who cares about them and you'd all forget about it in a week or two

it's a target because it is very popular. popularity is often confused with importance and the city is known for housing many major industries and companies. that and it has a large number of potential hostages. if you were to terrorize a city you would choose the one that would generate the most impact. without impact you would not get what you want.

because there are so many people and huge buildings to target. plus it would get a lot more attention compared to like utah or something because its so big and populated

It has such a big population and everyone is crowded into a small area so if a terrorist were to attack, many people would die.
*Also many people like to go there for vacation/breaks.
It's really sad actually.
