Andy Jackson had a plantation. Hmmm. Depends on how one defines "wealthy." I'd say it was #16, Abe Lincoln. He was truly a man of limited means. Perhaps the poorest of all U.S. presidents. I recall that Lincoln's wife Mary caused problems when she made changes to the white house spending money they did not have.
Forbes lists Andrew Jackson (who was born poor) as one of the ten wealthiest presidents. (see site below) Forbes also says that Lincoln was not as destitute as I thought.
This is a good question.

The above answers show some signs of correctness, but the question was who was the first president that was not wealthy. That without a doubt was Abraham Lincoln, a man who had to borrow money from his law partner to travel to his early political meetings and rallies and had to purchase new suits on credit. Adams and Jackson were born to humble beginnings but definitely were wealthy when they ran from president. A close second for being poor when running for office was U.S. Grant. Despite being the general-in- chief of the US Army at the end of the Civil War, his creditors were many. At his death, he had just completed his memoirs, a task that he wanted to finish prior to his death of cancer so that his family could live without having to pay off his estate and debts.

Some were born in less-than-wealthy circumstances, but made money on their own. Andrew Jackson was born in a poor family and had very little formal education. He made money and owned a plantation. Martin Van Buren's father was a farmer and tavern-keeper, but he did well on his own. Of course, Abraham Lincoln was born in a very poor family and had to educate himself by reading at home. He was never wealthy.

Poor people don't get elected president of the US...sorry, but that's the way life is. A few of them rose from humble circumstances, but none of them were without means when they ran for office.

John Adams. He lived on a farm and did the work himself. He made his way in life through perseverance and hard work, not slaves.
