Five months after elections failed to produce a government many Belgians are beginning to feel that life might just be better without politicians.

The Belgian state is experiencing its worst political crisis for 177 years as it marks 149 days of failure to produce a coalition government after elections on June 10.

But life has continued as normal for most people as the protracted negotiations and squabbling between 11 Francophone Walloon and Dutch-speaking Flemish political parties drags on and on.

On her way home through a bustling Brussels rush hour, 27-year old Nadine Vandenbosch wondered what Belgium's political class is for.

"We may have gone without a government for a record time but nothing has changed. People still go to work. We pay taxes. The Metro runs on the time. If they are not careful they will realise that we Belgians don't need them," she said.

You are oversimplifying to say the least. I live in Belgium.
At this moment there is still no federal government ,that much is true. However there are the local Flemish and Walloon governments that are fully functioning and don't forget the European government. The metro for example is the responsibility of the communities not of the federal state. The political crisis in Belgium is serious but it is not an example of a country functioning without a government.

I think the solution just cos someone else proposed a solution as well is that the politicians admit they promised way too much on all sides. The thing is there are new elections next year for the communities with the same parties. If they compromise on anything today the voters will no doubt present them the bill for that or that's the fear at least and why parties on both sides are afraid to give in.

Our regions have a goverment, plus the old one is stil in fonction but only a new goverment can propose next year budget. The solution to this crisis is to choose english as the 4th national lenguage and "lingua franca".

very interesting, and it is true we don't even need a government!

but understandably the politicians like us to think otherwise.
