you can convert 7 to 21/3, subtracting 4/3 gives you 17/3, which is 5-2/3

Get a common denominator, which is 3. Transform 7 to look like 21/3. Then subtract.

21/3 - 4/3 = 17/3

17/3 is equal to 5 2/3 because 3 divides into 17 5 times yet has a remainder of 2.

7 - (4÷3)

Have to have the common denumerator then you can subtract the numerators:

(21÷3) - (4÷3) = 17÷3

This can be written by dividing 17÷3 and finding 3 can go into 17 five times evenly. 5 x 3 = 15 which gives us a remainder of 2 (17-15=2) so we write that as 5 + (2÷3):

17÷3 = 5 + (2÷3)

7 − 4/3
7/1 − 4/3
Multiply 7/1 by 3/3
(7 × 3)/(1 × 3) − 4/3
21/3 − 4/3 = 17/3 = 5 2/3

And as an addendum, for the rest of your mathematical career, just turn all mixed numbers into improper fractions and go from there. Much easier.
