Water is liquid...the molecules are free to move about each other, but they stay close by and assume the shape of their container. Something like water filling a tumbler.
Gas...the molecules are free to move about each other and they can roam far away from each other and are contained only by closed containers. Like steam coming out of a locomotive and dissipating into the air.
Solid...the molecules are fixed in place relative to each other; they can form shapes of their own. Like the screen of your computer.

"Water" usually implies being in the liquid phase of that chemical. They use the word ice for solid water and steam for gaseous water.
