Water is liquid...the molecules are free to move about each other, but they stay close by and assume the shape of their container. Something like water filling a tumbler.

Gas...the molecules are free to move about each other and they can roam far away from each other and are contained only by closed containers. Like steam coming out of a locomotive and dissipating into the air.

Solid...the molecules are fixed in place relative to each other; they can form shapes of their own. Like the screen of your computer.
