To say certain individuals would do something cannot be answered. You can speculate, but speculation about a specific person (or people) is useless, especially when you don't know those people. And even if you did know them, you couldn't be sure. How many times have you been shocked by the choices made by those people you do know?

However, when you look at it as a general question, human nature being what it is, I firmly believe that some players from the past would've taken steroids if given the chance. Just like some players are alcoholics and others are clean-living and others are unfaithful and others are lazy and others are jerks. I just can't say specifically who those players would be.

Babe Ruth was retired prior to steroids being tested on humans. Steroids were first synthesized in the 1930s, after he set his HR records.

Your question is well taken but it's one that can never be answered. I will say this however, the three players you've mentioned were so much better than their peers and loved the game so much, that I would have to give all three the benefit of the doubt and say no, they would not have taken steroids.

Since the three are no longer here to speak for themselves I want very much to believe that the game was too important to them to disgrace it in any way. They may all have lived imperfect lives but when it came to the game, they honored it.

I think that no era in sports is perfect. Babe Ruth drank, smoked and was one rude sob. It is in our nature to look for something to give us the edge on the competition. The players are wrong but MLB did not care enough about them to make them stop. They were filling stadiums. That was most important to MLB. Now they want to act ashamed. Pffft!

Ruth definitely would have took roids. He showed up for games drunk, you think he would have thought twice about roids? Any advantage you can get a player is going to take, if it makes you better, you get more money. If you could take something to make you better at your job and increase your pay, would you take it?

Sure why not, since they weren't banned until recently, so anyone who took them before the ban would not have been breaking mlb rules.

Of course we could never know, but my guess is that Ruth would have taken them. There is some evidence that he used a corked bat at some point. He broke every other rule there was. I think he would have done it.
