This may sound a bit strange, but while watching a gardening programme on the T.V. a while back I remember someone on there saying that urine kills brambles and nettles if you pour it over them.
It might be worth a try i suppose, at least it wont cost you a penny.

after months of chopping, digging and bludgeoning my bramble bushes i gave up and just left them. Some time later i was pleasantly surprised to get a wonderful harvest of blackberry's. My advice is just to leave them be !

If there are a lot of them hire a flame thrower and burn them to the ground, I had a friend who bought a goat to keep his garden clean, he used to hire it out.

Use a weed killer such as Round-Up. You may need to spray more than once. Keep in mind it kills everything, but it neutralizes in the dirt

non really.
there are brushwood chemicals ,but they stay in soil a while.
on the occasions i have had to remove them
scythe or strim them
then burn over roots
dig roots out

Trimming the bush is best. I've trimmed my neighbours bush a few times this year.
