Too many variables.

Best to drive up to Autozone and have them plug in an OBD-II scanner to read the problem code. They do this for free.

Most likely it's a faulty sensor.

There are a lot of variables here....how many miles? A car with 'higher' miles and it could be a O2 sensor. 'check engine' light means something is wrong with emissions. AKA-O2 sensor, crank possition sensor, stuff like that.

Have you had the engine bay cleaned or pressure washed recently? That has caused some problems with BMWs in the past.

If its coming on and off, I will bet that the heater on the O2 sensor is not preheating the sensor enough, so you are getting erratic readings. Could also be something as simple as a exhaust leak...does the car sound funny sometimes? Make an odd noise here and there?

The only way to be sure is roll it into a BMW dealership. They shouldn't charge a whole lot for a diagnosis....I think my local dealership charges $85. Pay the $85 and let them figure it out. Then fix the part/problem yourself if you are mechanicly inclined.

You may need to reset the engine computer after you check for problems. I replaced the gas cap on my vehicle when I got the same code, but I had to remove and replace the fuse for the engine computer before the light went off. Either that or go to the dealership and spend a ton of money just so they can turn a light off for you.
