You should have just spit the hot potatoes out. But what's done is done.
Yes, you did injure/burn your esophagus.
If you are having that much pain you need to see your doctor. Take small doses of maalox or mylanta or riopan or whatever liquid antacid you like several times a day. Take it and then don't drink right after to allow it to take care of the burn by soothing it.
If you had a serious tear or burn to your esophagus you would have been in surgery or the hospital within the hour.
Take Care.

I have to disagree w/ the other person who answered... Just recently I swallowed a chunk of food that was much hotter upon chewing than I realized...pretty much straight off of the stove (I blew on it first...give me some credit here). My mouths natural reaction to rid itself of the heat was to swallow. The hot chunk burnt my throat, and continued to burn my esophagus until I ran like a maniac to find a drink to chug. Now 2 days later I have incredible indigestion and always feel as if I have a huge burp stuck in my throat. I have no idea what is happening internally or if this can cause disease or serious damage, but I'm still alive and able to eat and thats a good sign...although I am going to consult my Doctor if this keeps up for more than 7 days as I do not naturally have indigestion.

RE:
Can hot foods damage your esophagus?
Last Wednesday I swallowed some hot mashed potatoes. It didn't burn my mouth because I swallowed quickly but it burned all the way down to my stomach. I am still having pain down my esophagus when I swallow. Could I have caused major damage, or should I just wait and let it get better? Does...

You can burn your esophagus. Talk to your doctor. If it's severe enough, he may prescribe you Nexium. It helps heal the burn. They use it for heartburn, but the only difference here is that heartburn comes up, and the potatoes went down. It's still a burn either way.

I doubt you can swallow a hot enough food/drink to burn your esophagus (you'd probably spit it out or not get it into your mouth).

I've done that, too. Drink some aloe vera juice. It has amazing healing properties. I think about 4-6 ounces a day should be good. Read the label to be sure. (It's been awhile, and I don't remember how much it took for mine to heal.)

Sounds like you burned your throat as you would your tongue. I heard of someone cutting the inside of their throat eating a dorito and having to have surgury to fix it. It'll heal just like other burns do, try not to eat anymore hot food. Luke warm at best until it feels better.
