I am an Intern student from CT that is currently at a fish farm in TX. The other day, while my boss and I were doing some collecting at a local creek a small branch, no bigger than 1/5th of an inch in diameter went through my water shoe and punctured my heel. At first the wound was not bleeding and I brushed it off as a bruise, but less than a minute later it started bleeding for a short amount of time (roughly 5 mins). The pain, while excruciating to walk on, is not enough to make me feel it is worth going to the emergency room. However, I am not sure how long to stay off my foot, what to do to speed up recovery, or if there is anything I should be worried about. My insurance has still yet to kick in, and I dont want to make my boss pay for somthing that occured while on recreation. Any ideas? I want to get back to work, and I dont want to feel disabled come thanksgiving either.

Soak your foot in warm water with salt and peroxide several times a day. Try to gently pull back on edges of wound for a few days to keep it open to promote drainage. Apply generous amount of antibiotic cream.
If it is a clean wound without anything stuck in it, it should begin to heal in 4 or 5 days. If not it may need medical attention.

It is well he had a latest tetanus shot, one much less factor to fear approximately. You have performed simply proper in cleansing and dressing the wound. I could upload that retaining the foot expanded and making use of ice for 20 mins each hour will alleviate next swelling and agony. Increased drainage, swelling, and agony could point out viable infectious approach and could most probably first look 24 to 36 hours after preliminary damage, takes a at the same time for micro organism to multiply ample to purpose a difficulty. Then see the healthcare professional as at that factor antibiotics could be indicated.

Oh dear.

Well, first, douse the wound with alcohol and cover it with a band aid. Second, get a tetanus shot if you're not immunized. Third, watch it. And if infection sets in bite the bullet and go to the ER.

Good luck.
