X + Y = 12

X * Y = 45

Find X in terms of Y from the first equation:

X = 12 - Y

Substitute for X in the second equation:

X * Y = 45,

(12-Y) * Y = 45.

then solve for Y.

You could do it the algebra way, but for this problem game logic may be easier. The algebra way is to set the two equations a+b=12 and ab=45 up as a system of equations and solve by substitution. The other way is to make a list of numbers that add up to 12. (Since the sum and the product are positive, you know there will be no negative numbers or zeros). So, 1+11, 2+10, 3+9, 4+8, 5+7, 6+6 are your choices. None multiply to get 45.

Whether I do this by algebra or the other way, the answer doesn't exist. Did smart guy figure out the right question?

You start with the 45--must be a 5, right? You then subtract 5 from 12 and voila, the answer.

7+5=12

Methinks the Question is Wrong!!!!!

Last time I checked 7x5 = 35, not 45.
