I have been married for almost a year, and haven't changed my name because I have a somewhat unique situation.
I want to keep my 1. firstname, 2. middlename, and 3. lastname.
Then, I want to simple ADD my husbands name to that list. There is no place on my marriage license to list your "new name" so is the only way to do what I want to file for a "legal" name change with the county clerk and pay upwards of 300 dollars? I find this to be a little patriarchal and arcane, not to mention insane (since, in the end I just want to keep my names and take his too), so I hope someone knows of another option!!

Let me clarify: I DON't want a hyphenated last name. I just want to be: FIRSTNAME, MIDDLENAME, LASTNAME, HUSBANDSLASTNAME

You don't add your new name to your marriage license nor do you need to pay to change your name. If you are Ashley Renee Anderson and then marry then you want to remain Ashley Renee Anderson Murphy, then all you have to do is take your marriage license to the SS office and DMV and they will change it for you. Tell them how you want your name to read and they will do it for you.

All you should need to do to change your name is bring in your marriage certificate to each place you need your name changed (i.e the dmv) and let them know you are changing you name. They'll ask you what it's going to be and you tell them it's going to be Jane Mary Smith-Jones instead of Jane Mary Smith. Same thing with the social security office and the banks. The marriage certificate will make it really easy so make sure you have it with you.

all you have to do is change it at the social security office
start working under it and pay your taxes using it
you don't have to pay for a legal name change
and you can keep all the names as they are just add his
the lisence doesn't have to list the new name some states do and others don't

A lot of women are doing that nowadays.

Example:
Joan Marsha Smith-Davis

You'll have your first, middle and last anme then a hyphen and your husbands last name after that. I think it you just start adding it it's ok, as long as you hyphenate it.

Marriage is arcane, but you did that, didn't you? Hyphenated-last-names make me laugh.
