There is such a thing as a waterproof shower. You have to use the right products. This is the best way to do a shower. It's aslo DIY friendly. http://www.schluter.com/8_4_kerdi_shower_kit.aspx
Look around thier site and read the directions and watch the videos. You can use this over backer board or if you want to use greenboard you can also. You can get Homedepot to order it for you.

After thousands of sq. ft. of tile; and life in general; I know this much. NOTHING is Waterproof; although Ducks are close.

Have you a pan? a liner? or a molded shower basin?

Grout,,,no matter how much I wish it was; is not waterproof; but as important as the materials you use on the tile; is the substrate material.

I actually prefer the molded shower basin as opposed to total tile; but that's just my preference. You state the WHOLE room will be tiled; and I suggest the entire room be fitted in the same substrate. Concrete backer board.

For showers and tubs in a tile situation I have, for a long time; tiled all the way to the ceiling. I use a poly blend mortar and sanded grout. standard 1/4 inch grout lines, for floors, often 1/8 for walls.

Proper PREP, and proper mortar and grout will help certainly. You may get many answers that state USE Sealer; and it won't hurt; but it will require some regular RE-Sealing.

The shower drain cap should be sealed and often comes with a rubber flange/washer. It should also be removeable.

Obviously some GRADE should be considered that runs the shower floor water to the drain head.

Pay really good attention to the drain area. Put on a rubberized coating if it is all going to be tiled(in any area where water will hit or sit - then tile it.

Shower pan must be constructed properly.
