According to Wikipedia it was first performed in the early 1930's, but not by Abbott and Costello. It came from other comedians sketches and eventually becaome "Who's on FIrst" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who's_on_First They started working on it in 1938, performed it in their film debut "One NIght in the Tropics" and had it copyrighted in 1944.
