Best bet is to go outside to a clear area away from buildings and power lines. Next best is to brace yourself in a doorway. Those things are easier said than done. Anyone that has experienced even a 4.5 will probably tell you they couldn't stay on their feet much less walk to safety. I once lived in Tujunga California (outskirts of LA and the Verdugo Mountains and La Tuna Canyon, big earthquake zones ala 1971 Selmar Quake and the one in the 90's as well, Mountains thrust upward about 4 feet and about 12 feet north in the 1971 quake) They would have a tremor and I would think I was having a heart attack at age 23 and thinking seriously of calling an ambulance. A few minutes they would come on TV and announce the tremor much to my relief. So, the real actuality is you can do nothing. But if hit by one expect aftershocks. Turn of your gas and otherwise prepare for them.

This is usually what you do: If you are inside, find the nearest possible desk and crawl under it. If you don't have one of those, stand in a door way and hold on tight. If you are outside, I suggest you find the nearest shelter possible, because trees could fall on you.
Once and after you stop feeling the shakes, stay there for a couple more minutes to make sure it has stopped. Then check and make sure everyone near you is alright :]
This is just what I know of.
There's a saying called "Drop, cover, hold."
Hang on to that phrase..
it might come in handy one day.

Get out of the way of windows or anything glass, run for a closet or bathroom, or get under a strong table. You want to protect yourself. Don't go outside running down the street because light and electrical poles could fall down on you, and parked cars could slide into you.

Nothing you can do. Just try to get under a doorway, run from any windows. I was in a good one-Whittier quake in 1987. I moved from CA, will not live there. It's not just the original quake, aftershocks continued for months after.

Your supposed to stand in a doorway. Because it's a structure & nothing is going to fall on you. Or you could hide under the kitchen table & hold on to the legs.

Didn't they teach you this stuff in school? we had earthquake drills quite often all throughout my school years.

I just lay there in bed or sitting on the couch. They don't phase me as much as they did when I was young. I remember the Northridge earthquake-----that one was actually scary & my whole house moved!! We have small ones quite often here in Southern California, but I am use to them.~~~

usually nothing. They don't get that bad around here. People, just overexaggerate how bad it actually was and repeatedly ask, "did you feel the earthquake?!"

no big deal.
