Y_t = Y_0 + (vert. comp.) - (1/2)gt^2

Here's the form you'll usually see it in:
h(t) = (-1/2)gt^2 + v_0 t + c

h(t): height at a certain time, t.
g: gravity....
a_0: initial velocity
c: initial ondition or height

And you can see that this is a PARABOLA, or a QUADRATIC FUNCTION.

those big hanging cables on suspension bridges are parabolas.

( a hanging table with no forces on it except gravity is a shape called a catenary. but the tension in the bridge cables changes the shape to a parabola)
