x = 4, y = 5

I plugged x + 1 in place of y in the second equation.

x + 1 = -x +9

Then I added x to both sides:

2x + 1 = 9

Subtract 1 from both sides:

2x = 8

Divide both sides by 2:

x = 4

Plug 4 in for x in the first equation:

y = 4 + 1 = 5
