yes.
even the best maintianed car will wear. and this wear, while still within tolerance, allows for parts to not be at their optimum. this is where extra friction occurs and it takes fuel for the motor to break that fricton to get you going.

Yes on a gasoline engine but on a diesel engine its quite the opposite. As a gasoline engine wears the mileage will drop, but on a diesel engine the mileage actually goes up. The reason being is that the diesel engines are usally built really tight and they don't spin as fast as the gasoline engines so the "wear and tear" doesn't happen for a really long time on diesels. I have owned quite a few diesels and i kept a daily log book for fuel usage on my vw jetta tdi and i have seen the fuel mileage go up, I compared my finding on tdiclub website and its the norm of the tdi to experince a increase in mileage, and same with my wife's dodge ram diesel.

yes however this can be minimized by keeping the vehicle in good tune. new plugs and wires every 30K miles, inspect your air filter every time you change the oil and replace when it starts to get dirty, also check your tire pressure weekly. improperly inflated tires account for the highest reasons cars get poor mileage. inspect your brakes often (dragging calipers can cause poor mileage too) and lastly have your car aligned, a vehicle that goes down the road crooked or dragging one tire will certainly cost more fuel.

It all depends on how wetll you take care of it and keep it serviced at proper intervals. I have a 94 Ford Taurus with 247,000 miles, it still gets 26 MPG highway. The only things I have done is keep the engine serviced and the transmission fluid changed. I did have the trans overhauled and updated at 190,000 miles, had a band slipping from normal wear. other than that, been a great car.
