i just find that SO funny!! like she is trying to say that her 'secret' mission in being a swimsuit model was to 'empower' black women~! and she really just looked so proud of herself when she said that too! lol.
yea I'm sure she didn't do it for the money or the fame! or nething like that! she just ran around and showed the world her goodies to EMPOWER women!! lol

I don't mean to hate on Tyra, I think she means well.... in her own way! and I do watch her show occassionaly. It's just that I find some of the things she says so outrageous! it's funny how Narcissistic she is! :) Like she really believe these things she says!

I'm kinda getting tired of all the "black" stuff. Whatever happened to just empowering women in general? Saying things like what she said, in a way creates more racism. I hate to say it but I swear its like black people think everything happens to 'em because of their skin color.
People need to stop using race for everything. A woman is a woman no matter what her skin color is..and a man is a man no matter what skin color he has. Black, white, Native American, Indian, green, orange purple blue..it don't bloody matter, we all bleed the same.
I'm tired of Tyra; some of the things she does seem like they're done with good intentions, other things it is like she is doing them for more fame. I'm also tired of people like Oprah, Dr. Phil, etc. They act like know it alls and seem to be very full of themselves. And to be honest Tyra seems to copy Oprah a lot. Do I hate them? Of course not. Do I think they're bad people? Of course not. I like them for the simple fact that they do help people. But other than that...eh, I just don't care for em. And Tyra's modeling career, well I don't believe she has "empowered" any women, whether black or otherwise, by being a model.

How does that empower black women exactly? If you're tall enough and skinny enough, how hard can modeling be??? Yea, she was the first black model on Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, but I don't see where the black community is any better off or worse off because of her being a model. But whatever. I like her, though. I think she's a much better role model than some of the celebrities that kids are looking up to today....Britney, Paris, Nicole and Lindsey. But, saying that was her purpose for modeling is laughable in my opinion. She didn't turn down all that money, did she?

How the hell is she empowering Black women with that horrible, fake looking weave! Really, it looks like some white chick crawled up on her head and died! Sorry, but Tyra Banks does not empower Black women. In fact if anything her weave and model show pretty much reinforce the same old standard, narrow view of beauty.

She's so full of it. Tyra is out to empower Tyra.
So far she's in support of:
Women
Black Women
Older Women (now that her modeling career is over)
Bigger Women (now that she is one)
Women Without Makeup (since she got caught on camera)
Women Who Dress Down (ditto)
Basically any issue that negatively and directly affects her, she swears she's in support of. But only when it gets in her way. I don't remember hearing -anything- in her earlier interviews about these issues when she was Thin and In.
She can't be a model anymore. She can't act or sing. So the only thing she can do is make herself a personality or an activist to keep getting paid.

Well we all know Tyra is full of herself (I love her anyway) but I can understand what she means. She had a skill and she used it as a stepping stone to do what she is doing now (whatever that is). Say what you will but she would not have been able to be who she is today without modeling. I know, I know she is obnoxious and she thinks she is mother Teresa but young girls do look up to her and she is positive (at least in the world of Britney Spears, rehab and sex tapes).
and may I add that modeling at a certain time was empowering to black women because we did dot see images of black women that were considered to be beautiful. This may not seem like a big deal but it is a big deal to lie in a world where you never see anyone who looks like you and everyone is saying what is beautiful is blond hair and blue eyes.

If her modeling career was about that, she'd have donated the supermodel dollars to a foundation or something.
