Here is another way to think about it.

Take the 1 full cup. One fourth of that would be 1/4 cup.

Now take the 1/2 cup. One fourth of that would be 1/8 cup.

So 1/4 of the total you started with is 1/4 + 1/8, or 3/8 cup.

I do it with improper fractions.

1 &1/2 cups is 3/2 cups
3/2 cups divided by 4 is (3/2) / (4/1) or (3/2) * (1/4)=
(3*1) /(2*4)= 3/8 cup.

if you make 1 and 1/2 a complex fraction it is 3/2
now 3/2 divided by 4...remember 4 is the same thing as 4/1.
and dividing fractions is easy you just have to multiply by the reciprocal.

so
3/2 divided by 4/1
is the same thing as
3/2 times 1/4
multiply the numerators..you get 3
multiply the denomenators.. you get 6
3/8

you can also do this on a calc....1.5 divided by 4 and get .375

1 and 1/2 = 3/2

how to get,
denominator*whole number + numerator / denominator
2*1 + 1 = 3/ 2

(3/2) / 4

(3/2) * (1/4) = 3 / 8
